Nocturno was originally composed for and premiered by a freshman saxophone student at Wayne State University in the fall of 2017. In playing baritone saxophone in the pep band and campus band, as well as talking to those who play it as a primary instrument, I came to realize that there just isn’t a lot of repertoire out there specifically for it, with many players doing transcriptions of cello pieces. Indeed, both the lyrical and agitato sections of this work suggest a cello-like quality, with this piece making full use of the unique tonal characteristics offered by this instrument.

Live performance by Vlad Marinski (baritone saxophone) and Michael Katopodes (piano) at Shawn Lee's Senior Composition Recital, March 3, 2020.
