Daredevil was commissioned in the summer of 2020 by Raul Carillo, a bass trombonist and a personal friend of mine. This unaccompanied work begins with a free-time introduction in the lowest ranges of the instrument before transitioning into a section with more swagger. Large intervallic jumps permeate the work, allowing for both a bass line and a melody to be accomplished by a single player. The work climaxes with a cadenza that takes the performer to the top of the instrument's standard range - much like a daredevil stuntman readying themselves for a high dive - before diving relatively quickly back into the low register of the instrument to finish off the piece.
